Rabbit Playpen
Rabbits simply make wonderful pets, but they are sensitive
creatures, in fact they can actually go into shock or die if frightened enough. While they thrive on affection and
cuddling with their owners, it is necessary to provide a rabbit playpen so they can get regular exercise and remain
safe. Remember, they are considered meals by any number of predators. Exercise is important for the overall health
and general welfare of a pet rabbit. They will become overweight very quickly if left in confined spaces for long
periods of time. Improper exercise can also cause other health concerns which can lead to a historically
low-maintenance animal becoming a financial burden after a few trips to the vet.
As a rule of thumb, it is suggested that at least four times
the size of the rabbit, when grown, should be provided for the appropriate size of a bunny's living area. To keep
it simple, the bigger the better. Double levels and higher, of living areas are offered and provide exercise for
rabbits. It is still best to allow as much free roaming as possible with a playpen. If you will watch for the area
where your rabbit has the tendency to use, it is quite possible to train them to use a litter box by simply placing
it in that corner he prefers.
It is also very important to keep in mind other pets that will
be interacting with your rabbit. Cats and dogs will of course instinctively see the rabbit as food. However, with
proper methods it is quite possible to acclimate each of them to a level of tolerance and even acceptance. It is
not unheard of to find a dog and rabbit cuddled up with each other after a period of time. Keep that in mind even
if using a playpen for your rabbit. They can be terrified at first encounters with a pup or cat, even though they
can not be actually captured by the perceived predator. A traumatic experience like this can actually cause much
trauma, even death for the rabbit. It is well worth the time invested to introduce the animals to each other in a
safe manner. It can also make it possible for your rabbit to roam the home freely for optimum
exercise.
A rabbit playpen must be high enough to prevent a rabbit from
jumping over it. The smaller the rabbit, the higher it can jump. They will also climb on other objects to gain
higher ground for a leap to freedom. Get the highest available and you can afford. The wire framed playpens sold
for dogs also make the perfect playpen for rabbits with plenty of room for exercise and allows for easy, direct
interaction with the pet. Always be aware that rabbits love to chew, actually it is essential for controlling the
length of their teeth, so be very aware of the surroundings. Ingested fibers and electrical cords can be disastrous
for bunnies. The same holds true for plastic and painted surfaces. Loving and caring for an affectionate, soft
cuddly bunny is something many more are becoming familiar with and enjoying
tremendously.
